2. What kind of identification will I need?

We can identify you as the document signer with any one of the following documents, if the identification document is current or has been issued within five years:

• An identification card or driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

• A United States passport.

• Other California-approved identification card, consisting of any one of the following, provided that it also contains a photograph, description of the person, signature of the person, and an identifying number:

(a) A passport issued by a foreign government, provided that it has been stamped by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service or the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

(b) A driver’s license issued by another state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue driver’s licenses.

(c) An identification card issued by another state.

(d) A United States military identification card with the required photograph, description of the person, signature of the person, and an identifying number.

(e) An inmate identification card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, if the inmate is in custody; or

(f) An employee identification card issued by an agency or office of the State of California, or an agency or office of a city, county, or city and county in California.

3. What if I don’t have the required identification?

We can identify you as the document signer by the oath of two credible witnesses who each have the appropriate identification listed above. Each credible witness will be asked to take an oath and swear or affirm under penalty of perjury to each of the following:

• The individual appearing before the Notary Public as the signer of the document is the person named in the document;

• The credible witness personally knows the signer.

• The credible witness reasonably believes that the circumstances of the signer are such that it would be very difficult or impossible for the signer to obtain another form of identification.

• The signer does not possess any of the identification documents authorized by law to establish the signer’s identity.

• The credible witness does not have a financial interest and is not named in the document signed.

4. Are there things you can’t notarize?

There are a handful of documents we cannot Notarize in the store in compliance with California State Law or National Notary recommendation. They are:

• Incomplete documents or documents that contain blank spaces to be filled out at a later time.

• Copies of Birth, Death or Marriage records (We are able to Notarize an Affidavit of Birth, Marriage or Death record.)

• Certified Copies of anything other than a Power of Attorney (We are able to notarize an affidavit of other items)

5. What if I can’t come to your store?

We can come to you. Call the store to schedule your traveling notary service. A travel fee will be applied for this service.

6. What if I can’t sign my name?

If you cannot sign your name, you may sign the document by mark. The requirements for notarizing a signature by mark are as follows:

• You as the signer must have the appropriate identifying documentation.

• Your mark must be witnessed by two persons who must subscribe (write) their own names as witnesses on the document. One witness should write the person’s name next to the person’s mark and then the witness should sign his or her name as a witness. The witnesses are only verifying that they witnessed the individual make his or her mark on the document. We, as Notary Publics are not required to identify the two persons who witnessed the signing by mark or have them sign the Notary Public’s Journal. Exception: If the witnesses were acting in the capacity of credible witnesses in establishing the identity of the person signing by mark, then the witnesses signatures are required.

• You as the signer must include your mark in the Notary Public Journal. To qualify as a signature, the making of the mark in the Notary Public Journal, must be witnessed by an individual who must write the person’s name next to the mark and then sign his or her own name as a witness.

7. Can you notarize a document in a foreign language?

Generally, state laws do not expressly prohibit the Notary from notarizing a document that is not in the English language. The danger, of course, is that the document is being misrepresented to the Notary However, we have a Spanish speaking Notary Public on staff so if it is in that language then we can help.

For any non-English document, the best option is to refer the signer to a Notary who reads and writes the language of the document. If that is not possible, the Notary should only proceed if the notarial certificate itself is in English or other language the Notary reads and writes. The letters and characters in the document's signature and in any ID document presented must also be understood by the Notary.

8. What if I can’t speak English?

Unfortunately, California Law requires us to be able to communicate with you in order for the signer either to swear to or affirm the contents of the affidavit or to acknowledge the execution of the document. An interpreter cannot be used.

9. Can I mail the Notarised document from your UPS Store?

Our UPS Store offers UPS Next Day Air, Second Day Air, Three Day and Ground services as well as USPS mailing options. In addition, we can copy, fax or scan your completed document all in the same visit.

10. What if my document doesn’t have a place for the Notary Public to sign?

We provide California State approved attachments that contain all the necessary wording, notary seal and signature at no extra charge.

11. How much does it cost?

Notary service pricing is limited by the state. A $15.00 fee is applied to each signature being notarized. Traveling fees are based on the location selected for service.

12.    ID's that are NOT acceptable are:

International Driver's Licenses

Expired ID's (issued more than five years ago)

Temporary, Paper Driver's Licenses

Mexican Consulate ID cards

Marriage Certificates

Birth Certificates

2. Your document must be filled out completely (it's an actual law).

3. We must see the whole document, not just the signature page (again, an actual law).

4. We do not verify or stamp in any way on photographs

5. Your name in the document and on the signature line must have the same elements as your valid photo ID.  You can sign any variation of the name on your license.   "John H Smith" means you can sign "J Smith" or "J H Smith."  BUT if your name appears in the document as John Henry Smith and your valid ID only says "H," then we CANNOT notarize you.

For example: George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush are two different people -- but their name varies only by one letter!

In conclusion, the name in your document and the name on your valid ID must have the same elements.

6. We cannot wave a magic wand and make everything official.  All we do is verify your name and witness your signature; and in some instances, we issue an oath.

7. We absolutely do not sign randomly on a page without proper Notarial wording.  Just stamping and signing or stamping and signing on every page is improper and illegal.
